How About More Snow Plows?

December 31st, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in All about Vancouver

The big plow that couldn't

It’s been over a week and we’re still struggling with getting around in Vancouver – which begs the question:

“What happens if we get snow (hopefully) for the Olympics?”

We’ll have stranded airlines, no transport to events, and a lot of lost revenue.

Take a tip from New York – equip the garbage trucks with blades. That is if they are working – we haven’t had pick up for two weeks now.

h/t: The heavy snow storms that Vancouver has experienced recently is disturbing to many who wonder what would happen if similar storms occur during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Canadian Press reports Vancouver 2010’s Tim Gayda says they’ve always known weather could have a serious impact on Games’ operations. He says planning has been ongoing since day one, and not just for sports events. (Gayda said his team has its own approach – on top of meticulous planning. “We just pray,” he said.)

Vancouver 2010 vice president of operations Don Ehrenholz, reacting to the volumes of traffic at Vancouver’s airport last week which would be similar to when the Games take place in 2010, said the storms offer an opportunity to revisit Olympic planning. He says one thing they’ll be doing is working more closely with airlines to improve de-icing facilities to avoid flight delays.

According to Canadian Press organizers will be using this winter’s sports test events to see how various kinds of weather could have an impact on the Games.

I’m not alone in wondering if Vancouver is capable of an Olympics if it snows… get more of the gruesome details of how we cope in Vancouver here.

My First Question Would Be Why

infondo... basta chiedere...!

Fury has unleashed over Facebook’s ban on pictures of breastfeeding – here’s a few samples of typical images removed.

And like I wrote before, this is one group that takes their rights very seriously.  So far the Facebook protest group “Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!” has passed 84,000 people.

The Mothers International Lactation Campaign also kicked off a virtual protest against this move by Facebook, which mothers are calling discriminatory.

There are a couple of points to remember despite the chaos and anger – one is that Facebook, by virtue of being free, can do what it wants.  Sorry moms.

The second is why would you want to subject your Facebook friends with a picture of you breastfeeding? Send them an email if you have a burning desire to share your pictures. Plus, little Johnny looks a lot better without a boob smushed in his face, and will thank you later for not putting pictures online of him breastfeeding. Imagine the damage if he runs for office…

I say keep the ban. Once the door is opened, you can just imagine all the new ways boobs will infiltrate the place. :}

A Great Reason To (Counter) Protest In Vancouver

Occupation is a Crime

From the comments section:

Dear readers,

Help support the anti-terrorist cause by counter-demonstrating against the Pro-Palestinian, Pro-Hamas lobby at the art gallery on Saturday, January 3rd at 1pm.  The event details from their perspective are listed at www.vancouversocialist.com.

The first demonstration, two days ago in downtown Vancouver, proved to be a great media victory for the Palestinians, as can be verified by reading the Georgia Straight article on the above named webpage, which printed all of their slogans uncritically, while exaggerating the number of supporters in attendance.

The Palestinians are organizing via Facebook, via various Palestinian Solidarity Organizations, and elsewhere.

Canadians who do not want terrorist sympathizers in their midst are preparing to counter-demonstrate.  I have contacted various Jewish Organizations across the city, on Facebook and otherwise, and have informed the anti-terrorist media.

I need help organizing this.

Anyone who is interested, please contact me.

365.111 - Mr. Blue Sky

“Customers with 30gb Zune devices may experience issues when booting their Zune hardware. We’re aware of the problem and are working to correct it. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience!”

From gizmodo: The crisis has been dubbed by Zune users ‘Z2K9′, due to the apparently synchronized faceplantings across the country. According to tipster Michael, the Zune users experienced something like this:

Apparently, around 2:00 AM today, the Zune models either reset, or were already off. Upon when turning on, the thing loads up and… freezes with a full loading bar (as pictured above). I thought my brother was the only one with it, but then it happened to my Zune. Then I checked out the forums and it seems everyone with a 30GB HDD model has had this happen to them

This report is consistently corroborated by literally hundreds of others across the various Zune support and fan forums.

Microsoft at its best again.

P.S. get your Windows 7 here: BitTorrent. Who knows… they may get it right after all these years.
