From News 1130:

The latest national jobless numbers paint a pretty grim picture with almost 71,000 jobs that vanished last month. Nationally Statistics Canada says it’s the biggest monthly loss since the recession of 1982, but BC Finance Minister Colin Hansen says the picture is a lot brighter here on the West Coast.

“I think this is more evident that while British Columbia is not immune to the economic challenges to the world, we’re certainly prepared better off than pretty much any other jurisdiction in North America. The unemployment rate in British Columbia coming down to 4.9 percent, generally speaking around the province we are seeing very few layoffs and I think that’s good news for the BC economy.”

Hansen says compared with other provinces, BC has the advantage of being the least dependent on exports to the US.

Not sure I agree – Lumber is one of our larger industries and it’s been a little off of late.

The real reason why we are better prepared is:

- We pay more for welfare and social benefits. In fact Vancouver spends over $40K per homeless person.

- It rarely gets below 0 here, allowing you to pitch a tent for free.

- The drugs are great – we even have pot tours.

- we even have a blog about the lifestyle: I’ve noticed something peculiar: almost everyone I hung out with during the past few months was –willfully- unemployed.

Our unemployed get do get together at all sorts of events – just like this one today

So send us your unemployed – Vancouver is the place to be when you’re out of work.

A little off, how many mills have closed this year. How much raw lumber is being ship over seas and down to the states. Tourism is down all over, the salmon stocks are at a all time low and BC Finance Minister Colin Hansen says BC is doing OK with 4.9 percent unemployment. Maybe because all the unemployed went to Alberta and Saskatchewan for work. By chance is someone dipping into that good BC homegrown
