The scary thing I find about Obama’s victory is not the fact that he is very liberal or that he and his supporters in congress are protectionist. What is frightening is the backlash when his awe struck followers wake up and realize that this man can’t make everything right overnight, or in six months, or in a year. The problems he faces are monumental, but his disciples don’t want to hear that. As I watched the crowds last night I was struck by the adoration on their faces. It was like watching the raptures of the congregation at a Jimmy Swaggart revival meeting or the adoration on the faces of people in those old newsreels of the Adolph Hitler rallys. This is not to suggest that either Mr. Obama or his supporters are similar to the Germans of the 1930s…far from it. I wish Mr. Obama well, but he is only one man, and he must contend with the entrenched corporate interests in the U.S. that will be at work to thwart his every move. I’m afraid many of his believers are in for a serious disallusionment.
