I don't see any mention of the 40% of the Democratic members that voted no.

What Nan was trying to do was shame the Republicans into voting for the bailout to cover for the 95 of her caucus that didn't want to go against the overwhelming public opinion against the bailout.

She is way out of line calling out the GOP for voting to cover their asses for the election next month (although some may have been there on principle) when her people were donig exactly the same thing.

This isn't some measure where you need a 60% majority to get it passed and thereby need bipartisan participation. It is a straight simple majority vote and last time I checked, the Democrats had a majority.

The next question is, if this is such a dire emergency why didn't the democrats whip their members to pass it or even stick around through the (Congressional)holiday today and tomorrow to fix it.

By the way, markets don't look too bad today: Dow/NADQ/TSX all up 4.7%, 5% and 4.2%.

Ha ha ha Ya! All the Republicans were for it until Pelosi scared 'em all away with her speech.

The 2/3 of Republicans that voted against it did so because they were against it. Do you really think Pelosi's speech made them lose the courage of their convictions and vote against the national interest?

You're silly.

Peter. The post is not about how a speech was an excuse for voting down a critical bill. It is about how that speech is causing the markets to react. The rest of your comments may be correct, but they are also off topic except your last sentence. Decisiveness is required. Pelosi's blame game speech was not helpful. -- John M Reynolds

BTW I want to mention that the thwarting was a bi-partisan effort. Nancy Pelosi's own appointed commitee chair collegues voted NO against the bill.

The problem here is personal politics is winning over pragmatism and responsibility. These congressmen are afraid for their own political careers and it's hurting North America. A message to them: decisiveness is the only way to stay afloat.

While this speech was certainly high on the partisan rhetoric, let's be clear: using a speech as an excuse for voting down a critical bill is just pathetic.

The financial markets NEED this package. There is too much financial uncertainty in captial markets right now, and it is having an impact on investment in small businesses. Big business is having trouble remaining solvent. If this continues, we're talking about MAJOR job loss and possible buyouts from foreign interests.

Not a good thing, and don't think it doesn't have a HUGE impact on us here in Canada.
