The Ugly Side Of Socialism
As North America gets drawn deeper towards socialism, we should look to Venezuela to see what this disease of a system leads to.
Chavez, after sealing his presidency for years to come, is proving Margaret Thatcher’s quote true:
“The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”
First he nationalized oil and telecommunications companies. This week he’s nationalized food – by taking over rice mills by force, including a plant owned by Cargill.
He’s taken over taken over a eucalyptus tree farm run by Ireland’s Smurfit Kappa. He’s also threatened to take over the South American country’s top food producer, Empresas Polar – which means their days are numbered.
I won’t go into the human rights violations of his dictatorship…
The challenge comrade Chavez is faced with is that oil revenues now aren’t enough to prop up his government. Food shortages and hyper-inflation are taking hold. As he tries to keep the peasants onside, violent takeovers will continue.
Let’s call Chavez’s brand of socialism what it really is – theft for power.
In Canada, we’ve been given the taste of it by years of the Liberal and provincial NDP governments. We have socialized health, TV, and have an active process of redistributing wealth. By all measures, we live in a nanny state.
The provinces of Ontario and Alberta have been the only stable net contributors to the economy and are punished for this by having their wealth taken. A family in Alberta with a household income of $30,000 – $40,000 will pay out over $3000 for equalization payments, while a family in the province of Newfoundland which has a household income of over $100,000 will receive over a $1000 in benefits.
These “equalization payments” have not led to economic development in the areas receiving them, ensuring that the system will never end. Canada is really a socialist welfare state.
You only need to read The Waffle Manifesto of the NDP to see what the real goal of socialists is:
Capitalism must be replaced by socialism, by national planning of investment and by the public ownership of the means of production in the interests of the Canadian people as a whole.
Trade unionists and New Democrats have led in extending the welfare state in Canada. Much remains to be done: more and better housing, a really progressive tax structure, a guaranteed annual income. However, these are no longer enough. A socialist society must be one in which there is democratic control of all institutions, which have a major effect on men’s lives and where there is equal opportunity for creative non-exploitative self-development. It is now time to go beyond the welfare state.
Scary stuff if it wasn’t NDP fantasy. This kind of agenda always leads to dictatorships.
For whatever the reason, socialism needs violent control from the top to succeed. Why is that?
Now that the world has run out of “other people’s money”, we’re in for a rough ride.
The first reaction is what we are seeing today – the call for the government to save us. The borrowing other people’s money without thought of repayment, on an mind-boggling scale. The bribery of the masses through a promise of “free” stuff. Socialist agendas being rammed through… disguised as STIMULUS.
The really rough ride starts with the hard reality we’ll be forced to face as money dries up, and government run programs start to collapse.
This is what scares people most, as we’ve become used to living under a nanny state… that is supposed to save us from ourselves.
That day isn’t far away. Get used to the idea of looking after yourself.
If you’re a socialist, I might suggest that you hug a capitalist – you’ll be needing them real soon.
“Ideas become popular and take hold based on who uses them”
A good article on what Obama wants – when it comes to socialism:
President Obama knows the history of recessions and how Americans get out of them. He knows, for example, that if he gave back to the American family in just pure cash handouts what he is instead planning on taxing them (with interest) in the days to come, that the number would loom between $25,000-$65,000 per family, for every family in America.
But pretending to be doing something about the problem is only half the strategy for Obama. He truly intends to see socialized health care, and European styled labor agreements become reality in America. He knows the consequences of doing such things, he’s seen all the projections and what the outcomes would be, but he’s doing it anyway.
But there is one tiny problem standing in his way to getting there–”We The People!”
He knows that in order to be forced down paths that we don’t wish to go, the only way he gets us to change our mind is to create abject suffering and misery.
Then in Venezuelan styled cries for help, he can promise to take America to a better place economically, a place of greater care, a place of true serenity. A place like Venezuela.

“Get used to the idea of looking after yourself.”
In other words, start acting like an adult. The nanny state seems to be the most effective way of infantalizing a nation.
