She'd been an employee of the Chinese embassy and they were calling her back because they wanted her to have an abortion. One child policies can also skew the sex ratio. It's absolutley plausible that Westerners might decide they like girls better than boys. If you're going to only have one kid, it's only natural that you get to choose the sex, right?
